Pain Medication Instructions

We are aware that surgical procedures are anxiety producing and at times painful. We take postoperative pain management very seriously and use multi-modal therapy to address your pain management needs. Depending on the type of procedure that you are having, a different combination of pain management modalities are used to make your post-surgical recovery as painless as possible. However, please be aware that even best combination of medications may not resolve all of your pain and some discomfort should be expected during the immediate post-operative period.

For shoulder surgery (Scope, SAD, RC, Instability)

Percocet (Oxycodone-Acetaminophen) or Norco (Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen): take one tablet every 4-6 hours for pain control the first 2 days.
After the third day, you may take one every 4-6 hours as needed depending on pain. (30 Tablets).
Zofran (Ondansetron) 4mg every 6 hours as needed for nausea (8 Tablets). For Nausea use post anesthesia.
Colace (Docusate) 100 mg one tablet every 12 hours for constipation (5 Tablets). Stool Softener.
Mobic (Meloxicam) 15 mg one a day (30 Tablets). For Inflammation.
Prilosec (Omeprazole) 20 mg tablets twice a day with food (60 tablets). For preventative care.

For wrist, elbow, knee, or ankle scopes

Percocet (Oxycodone-Acetaminophen) or Norco (Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen): take one tablet with food every 4-6 hours as needed for pain (20 Tablets).
Zofran (Ondansetron) 4mg every 6 hours as needed for nausea (8 Tablets). For Nausea use post anesthesia.
Colace (Docusate) 100 mg one tablet every 12 hours for constipation (5 Tablets). Stool Softener.
Mobic (Meloxicam) 15 mg one a day (30 Tablets). For Inflammation.
Prilosec (Omeprazole) 20 mg tablets twice a day with food (60 tablets). For preventative care.
Aspirin 81 mg tablets twice a day for 30 days. To prevent blood clots following lower extremity surgery.

For ACL

For Joint Replacement/hemiarthroplasty

Percocet (Oxycodone-Acetaminophen) or Norco (Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen): take one tablet every 4-6 hours for pain control the first 2 days. After the third day, you may take one every 4-6 hours as needed depending on pain. (30 Tablets).

Please make sure that you are not allergic to hydrocodone or oxycodone and let us know of any additional drug allergies that you may have. Common side effects of these medications include dry mouth, dizziness, confusion, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, itching, and at times rashes. These side effects can be decreased by taking the medication with some food and drinking plenty of fluids. If any of these side effects is prolonged and continues (for example, if head ache or nausea continues more than a day), then please stop the medication and call our office for further instructions.

Oxycodone and Hydrocodone all cause drowsiness and may have interaction with other sedating medications such as Benzodiazepine. Please advise us immediately if you are taking any medications such as Valium, Ativan, Zanax or any other type of sedative medications.
